  1. Logical Addressing: Network layer logical addresses ka istemal karta hai, jaise IP (Internet Protocol) address. IP address network devices ko uniquely identify karta hai aur unhe source aur destination ke roop mein tag karta hai. Network layer IP addresses ke saath packets ko header mein include karta hai.

  2. Routing: Network layer routing ka dhyan rakhta hai. Is layer mein routing protocols ka istemal hota hai, jaise RIP (Routing Information Protocol), OSPF (Open Shortest Path First), aur BGP (Border Gateway Protocol). Routing protocols network topology, path selection, aur packets ke sahi destination tak pahunchane ke liye network devices ke beech communication aur routing decisions ko manage karte hain.

  3. Packet Forwarding: Network layer packets ko source se destination tak forward karta hai. Isme packet forwarding decisions aur routing tables ka istemal hota hai. Network layer packets ko hop-by-hop basis par intermediate network devices (routers) se guzarate hain, jisse packets ka sahi path follow ho sake.

  4. Fragmentation and Reassembly: Network layer fragmentation aur reassembly ko handle karta hai. Agar data link layer ke frames ki maximum size network layer ke packets se chhoti hai, to network layer packets ko chhote fragments mein divide karke transmit karta hai. Destination device fragments ko reassemble karke original packet ko prapt karta hai.

  5. Congestion Control: Network layer congestion control ko bhi manage karta hai. Agar network congestion hoti hai, to network layer congestion control mechanisms, jaise traffic shaping aur packet prioritization, ka istemal karke data transmission ko regulate karta hai.

  6. Logical Network Topology: Network layer logical network topology define karta hai. Isme logical networks, subnets, aur VLANs (Virtual Local Area Networks) ke configuration aur management hoti hai.
